Production Work

Samantha Loveridge

Samantha and I first met at a gig in Manchester back in 2018, she kindly offered me a lift home and by the end of the 30 minute journey we realised we had a shared passion for music!

Since that chance-meeting Samantha and I have worked together on a number of projects including our most recent collaboration with vocalist Keepa which was released on Lehar and Musumeci's label Multinotes.

In addition to our collaborations, I have also been working as a producer on several of Samantha’s tracks. In a music industry where ghost production is common, fake artists are prevalent and female producers in particular, face unwarranted scepticism about their contributions; we wanted to ensure that my role was credited in a way that maintained transparency without diminishing Samantha’s creativity and hard work.

The goal with my production work is to maintain the vibe and direction of an artist's original piece of music. It's important to me that any additions I add don't steer a track too far away from their original vision and that the artist’s voice is still clearly recognisable in the final version. As a rule of thumb I usually work on a track that is about 80% complete and just focus on the last 20% that's needed to get the track club-ready and strong enough to pitch to labels.

For this track I felt we needed the minimal percussion to really stand out so I spent quite a bit of time synthesizing unique drum samples - Beatsurfering’s RANDOM was a great tool for this! The next challenge was nailing the vocals, Samantha had recorded the rap herself and we really wanted to maintain the human dialect and rhythm from the original takes. We used a variety of vocal processing techniques and then some AI models to finally land on the finished version. We were really happy with the result as you can still hear all of the nuances from the original performance.

Samantha Loveridge - The Pusher [Innervisions]

When Samantha sent me the first version of the track I immediately had some Jimi Jules-style beats in mind. Little did I know that she was already in touch with Jimi, so when she sent over the first draft to him he liked it so much he passed it straight over to Dixon and it was immediately signed to Innervisions! However there was one caveat, the original version had an uncleared sample so we had a mad scramble writing new lyrics for the track before the deadline. But we made it on time and 'The Pusher' made it onto one of our favourite labels.

Yell.com Campaign

Yell.com TV Advert

Day V Lately - Pulse & Thunder

FOTN and former collaborator Desyfer were commissioned to create an old school 90’s track for a Yell.com ad campaign. The titular character ‘Day V Lately’ is trying to locate a copy of his record ‘Pulse & Thunder’ in a modern homage to the classic J. R. Hartley Yellow Pages advert.

The main challenge with this track was coming up with a fresh musical idea whilst maintaining the style and vibe found in classic tracks from the 90’s. In particular it was important to remember the technical limitations you’d find in studios 20 years earlier.

The track was released by Yell.com using a record label set up as part of the campaign ‘Found Records’ and went on to receive a remix from Riva Starr, airplay on Radio 1 and Radio 6, festival plays including Glastonbury and Exit Festival and it even got licenced to Minisitry of Sound’s Back to the Old Skool compilation CD!
